INFLUENZA
Influenza is a virus that typically originates in avian species and is transferred to humans in environments where people have very close contact with fowl.
Each year the strains most likely to circulate during the upcoming season are estimated based on last year’s prominent strains.
Viruses are a life form and mutate to adapt from one host to the next. Determining the exact strain each year usually attains a 15%-60% success rate, considering that the chosen strain may mutate.
From the homeopathic perspective, even though we come in contact with many viruses as well as influenza A or influenza B during our lifetime, whether or not we contract these is dependent on our level of “susceptibility.” Genetic predisposition, environment, nutrition, toxic load, and general vitality all play an important role in our susceptibility to contracting illness. The best prevention is clean, adequate nutrition and a healthy lifestyle free of stress.
When we do get sick, over-suppression of a fever can have negative effects. Fever is the body’s natural response to invasion of a virus or bacteria. While we never want to let a fever run wild, the actual number on the thermometer is less important than the level of vitality. As long as fluids are being taken and the individual is alert and responsive, fever is beneficial as it builds natural antibodies. Suppression can lead to worsening of symptoms (such as pneumonia) or lengthening the duration of the illness.
There are many homeopathic remedies that can support the system naturally, aid the body to naturally reduce fever, and speed recovery. Working with an experienced homeopath can help to support innate immunity without getting ‘stuck’ and worsening symptoms.
